How to tame the email beast.

P.S.: When you are reviewing your email preferences here, you will notice that you can direct emails from the forums to a different address than the address you have registered with NaCCRA. This makes it possible to have a separate mailbox for email from that forum. For example, you might have a mailbox for all of your subscriptions to blogs and periodicals. You could designat that mailbox for Forum emails send by our "In the Media" forum.

I get over 200 emails every day. It would drive me crazy if I didn't know two tricks for dealing with it. Here is what I do:

  1. I have separate email addresses and mailboxes for certain uses. The main ones are my personal Gmail account and my "public" hotmail account. I don't use the Gmail account when ordering stuff online, and I don't use it for registrations that are likely to become public. Almost everything that comes to my hotmail account is commercial promotions that I can ignore. Gmail offers nuanced filtering to separate mail into categories, and you can train it as you go.
  2. For my volunteer jobs, I have role-based addresses like vp@naccra.com. This makes it easier to filter and organize the mail.

Learning to use the Gmail filters is not a trivial task. But it is well worth the trouble if you are feeling overwhelmed. There are how-to videos on YouTube. Try watching one without trying to remember much. Your first run through the video gives an overview of what's possible. Dig deeper if you see something you want to try.
