People often say change is the only certainty. Katherine Pearson has identified four trends every resident and CCRC board member should consider. They are:

  • the impact of private equity and REIT money investors in “senior living,”
  • upcoming deep cuts in funding for Medicare and Medicaid,
  • immigration and wage rate pressures for hiring of care-workers; and
  • statistics about closures and bankruptcies of traditional options for care.

These are not news to NaCCRA's leadership, but I suspect most current and prospective residents aren't focused on them. They are disturbing, and our communities must prepare by staying engaged and informed. Meeting these trends will require full collaboration and unusual trust and unity between providers, boards, and residents. Together we can meet these challenges and even find hidden opportunities. Division and animosity will bring nothing good.

Richmond, I am always interested in what Katherine Pearson has to say. This was a nice high level. What I'd really be interested in would be the facts in their actual presentation. I'd even pay to buy a ticket to the show.

I sent out an article about a CCRC bankruptcy in Texas via the Listserv in my community and it raised my neighbors'

awareness of the problems mentioned. They were aware our community had been in bankruptcy years ago, but they hadn't been paying attention.
