Wyoming Volunteers Show How Experience Can Strengthen a Community
An AARP Wyoming feature highlights Clarence and Stella Montano as finalists for the Andrus Award for Community Service, which recognizes volunteers age 50 and older. The Sheridan couple supports older adults, caregivers, veterans, and families through AARP Wyoming, a hospital auxiliary, the senior center, the VA Food Pantry, community gardens, and other local groups.
Stella helped create a caregiver-support series offering weekly meals, speakers, and support; AARP has replicated the program in other communities. Clarence leads a 30-person volunteer action team and helps with food security and veterans’ fundraisers. Together, they have delivered meals, supported the Alzheimer’s Association, served on boards, and helped older adults remain at home through LifeLink, which raises money for personal emergency devices. Which volunteer role in your community has made the biggest difference?
