Older Adults Bring Experience, Skills, and Purpose to Their Communities
An article from 2Life Communities highlights three ways older adults contribute: sharing experience across generations, strengthening multigenerational workplaces, and volunteering with nonprofits, schools, and civic organizations. It cites a Cornell University program in which students interviewed adults over 65; the program improved students’ attitudes toward older adults and their sense of purpose.
The article also cites research linking regular volunteering among nearly 13,000 adults over 50 with better mental health, less depression, and lower mortality risk. Separately, Do Good Institute research found that nonprofit leaders reporting that volunteers enabled more personalized attention rose from 37% in 2019 to more than 65% in 2022. These findings describe relationships and reported organizational benefits, not guarantees for every volunteer. How does your community make it easy for residents to mentor, work, or volunteer in ways that use their experience?
