US News Rankings are Out
Author Last Post

Jennifer,

The Newsweek (not US News) rankings are based on data for the year ending Oct. 15, 2025.

With regard to the Aldersgate financial troubles, there is no data regarding CCRC financial health input into the rankings. The data sources are explained towards the end of the Newsweek article.

It's the Newsweek rankings that were reported on by McKnights on Nov. 21, not US News.

One of the reasons I chose to live at Panorama in Lacey, WA was their CARF certification. The five-year certification ended two years into my residency. Management chose not to renew the certification. The reason given was that the certification was no longer needed because Panorama now has a lengthy waiting list.

That is indeed true. Last I heard the waiting list numbers well over 1000.

However, I was chagrined to find out that the CARF certification was sought not as a way to insure certain standards are met, in the interested of providing stellar service, but rather as a marketing tool. I'd mistakenly thought that the focus was on providing service to residents, rather than using certification as a marketing tool.

This might be a reason that the community is no longer CARF certified. Our management feels it is expensive and time consuming and they don't "need" it. Do residents need it?

Thank you for sharing this. I glanced at it with interest, wondering when the "as of" date was.... probably not all that long ago. If that's the case, things can change fast. Aldersgate in Charlotte, NC is in financial trouble, now being supervised by the NC Dept of Insurance; and Trinity Terrace of Ft Worth (a member of Pacific Retirement Services.. or PRS) has had its residents hire an attorney to bring a law suit against PRS.... info via a friend of mine who lives at Trinity Terrace.

I've mentioned this before, somewhere, in these forums ..... about CARF Certification. Years ago my parents lived in a Missouri CCRC and I noticed their framed CARF certification hanging on the wall outside their administrative office. I was pleased to see this. A couple of years later it was gone, so I inquired of CARF what happened --- did this CCRC flunk an inspection? Did they choose not to renew on their own? Was certification taken away by CARF during the period a certification was valid? Their response to me, a consumer, was "ask the management at the community." I did, but I had no way to verify the reason they gave me.

The US News rankings of CCRCs was published in McKnights today, Only 330 of the 1900 or so CCRCs were ranked. You can see the full list here: (click). CARF counts for 10% of this rating.
