My community's tech committee has a referral list for technicians. The two men who are employed by the community will provide limited services, but generally will not do extensive work. Many services are free, and the hourly rate is low. The outside techs range from a low of $40 and hour to a high of $165 an hour. They all will come to the resident's apartment, but the high-rate ones prefer to use remote support software (Team Viewer).
Some residents have contracts with Geek Squad, but the quality of service has not been consistent.
A new service is being offered by a retired office manager in the area. It's not repair work; she helps the less tech-savvy residents to unscramble email files, clean up and organize files, and do other digital housekeeping tasks that are usually left to users by the techs. She charges $40 an hour. This service is also provided by some home health aids who have the skills.
