There is an advocacy group that's focused on Skilled Nursing. The Consumer Voice advocates for residents of geriatric care facilities (not independent seniors); however, it offers a very useful set of organizational tools and is a rich source of ideas that should be helpful to all residents of managed senior housing and CCRCs. It is right on target for residents of Assisted Living, Personal Care, and Skilled Nursing facilities.

I’ve now watched all three episodes of the documentary video: No Country for Old People - A Nursing Home Exposé. I highly recommend that you set aside 3 evenings for the three hour-long compassionately-told episodes. (It’s streaming for the foreseeable future on Amazon Prime Video.)

You’ll see and hear from dozens of care givers, professionals and reformers who speak from their professional and personal knowledge and experience.

And perhaps many of us will be moved to join the ROAR movement that’s fighting for Respect (for our most vulnerable Seniors), Oversight (of nursing homes from our state and federal agencies), Advocacy (for doing what’s needed to solve the crisis in Senior care), and Reform (of a profit-driven system that is failing our elders).

I’m emotionally drained — and angry — from having just watched the first of three episodes of the documentary video called “No Country for Old People”. (View on Amazon Prime video for a modest price.)

It’s a daughter’s tenderly told story of her mom, dying for lack of care in a nursing home. It depicts the tragic situation of nursing homes in the U.S. — a situation that is likely to grow worse now that the majority party in Congress has cut back funds for Medicaid, and now that our administration is targeting the immigrant population that provides part of the staffing of nursing homes. The documentary is quite an indictment of an industry that is built on under-staffing and providing inadequate care for our elders, while it seeks profits.

It makes me hope that NaCCRA can help to call attention and bring resources to this critical problem, now that the NaCCRA board has expanded its vision and mission to focus on the many care settings for Seniors…and not just CCRCs.
