Staffing Shortages and Immigration
Author Last Post

We read about immigrants with green cards being swept up and deported along with those here without documentation. Leading age says that something like 36% of the caregiver workforce are immigrants. These days even Puerto Ricans who are US Citizens with US passports report that they live in fear of ICE.

The implications for CCRCs are dire. Already faced with rising costs and a shortage of staff, the situation is likely to get much worse and impact all NaCCRA members adversely.

The NaCCRA board discussed this situation with a representative of the American Business Immigration Coalition. ABIC is a group of leaders from diverse businesses that will be affected just as healthcare will. They are pro-workforce, seeking to protect those immigrants already here and working and those who wish to do so lawfully. If you are concerned about rising labor shortages and costs, this is a group you should learn more about. You may want to draw upon the facts and stories available through ABIC and inform your elected representatives about how the workforce at your community may be affected.
