Aging Protective Programs Facing Elimination
Author Last Post

Action is critical. Retirees must advocate as strongly as possible as we are the only ones. Thank you, Richard. Here is more information on the issue.

NASW Action Alert: Protect Elder Justice Programs from Elimination (2025)

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has issued an Action Alert, urging individuals to contact their Members of Congress to protect crucial aging and disability programs from potential elimination. This alert stems from a leaked draft of the Trump administration's FY2026 federal budget, which proposes cuts that could severely impact Elder Justice programs and those serving older adults and people with disabilities. These proposed cuts threaten to weaken existing efforts to prevent and address the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and individuals with disabilities.

NASW and the Elder Justice Coalition encourage individuals to email their Members of Congress to express concern and advocate for the protection of these vital programs.

Key issues highlighted in the alert include:

  • Project 2025: A broader initiative that could impact social safety nets and programs for older adults and people with disabilities.
  • Older Americans Act (OAA): A significant vehicle for delivering social and nutrition services, including the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program and Adult Protective Services (APS).
  • Elder Justice/APS Programs: These programs support initiatives to uphold the rights of older people and address abuse, neglect, and exploitation; cuts would be detrimental.
  • The leaked budget proposal: The draft budget raises concerns about the future of these crucial programs, emphasizing the need for advocacy.

Contacting Members of Congress can help raise awareness and pressure policymakers to protect Elder Justice programs and ensure continued support for older adults and people with disabilities.  (AI web search)

The Elder Justice Coalition reports that major legislation seeks to eliminate the few programs we have to protect the elderly from abuse, neglect, fraud and exploitation.

"Though unfinalized, this draft budget revealed the administration's goal to cut the following federally funded programs: Elder Justice/Adult Protective Services, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Elder Rights Support Activities, and Aging and Disability Resource Centers. Without these programs, our society's collective efforts to prevent and address the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and people with disabilities would be diminished greatly. Together, we can preserve and strengthen systems that promote dignity and fairness as we age and if we live with disability."
