Offsite Transportation
Author Last Post

This is a great idea. Most of us have cars at my CCRA, and I’d argue half are like me and drive once a week at most. Seems like a great opportunity. I’ll bring it up with our ED. thanks for thinking of this.

Has your community considered ZipCar for those who would like to drive occasionally and pay by the hour? They are in some cities and on college campuses and would be perfect for those who don't want to deal with insurance and maintenance but want to have the freedom for occasional trips.

Wind Crest is an Erickson Living Communite in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Due to the 401(c)(3) tax status, Wind Crest is not included in the local Regional Transportation District (RTD). Offsite transportation provided by Wind Crest is limited to 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays with a charge of $6.00/mile ($4:50/mile for mnedical appointments) and a 15 mile limit. I started a No-Car-Club two years ago to find offsite options for residents without the Wind Crest limitations. The "Club" was a success, and seversl options were idntified for offsite transportation. The "Club" will now encourage residents to use Wind Crest onsite transportation to minimize local trips on the 82 acre campus.

The No-Car-Club was defined as a support group to identify offsite transportation for whose who are considering giving up the car, have already done so, or who have physical of visual problems that make driving difficult. A smilar "Club" might be considered for other CCRCs with limited access to public transportation.
