✨ Resident Life

Access to streaming services like NetFlix
Bert

In our community we have two public spaces with access to cable TV and the internet for display on screens - an auditorium and an entertainment center. Management pays for cable TV but not streaming services like NetFlix.

How do other communities deal with subscription media like Netflix in common spaces? How do they manage subscriptions - paid by management, by a resident association, by a resident contribution, ....? Who controls the access password? Can any resident choose any programming that is displayed?

In our facility, set-up/maintenance of all facility provided services are controlled by the IT department on all community TV's etc. Individuals with streaming access may be set up in their own apartments.

If an individual wants to share a particular program, movie, game or something with others on the "big" screens in the community rooms they may use their streaming service on their own device, via a HDMI cable (between device and TV) but it does require changing the TV input (available on the remote). Generally we are not able to "download" or set-up personal password protected information on the community room TV.

We have and auditorium with a theater-quality projector and screen, and three conference rooms with big screen smart TV sets. The Bistro also has a TV with some restrictions on what's shown. Residents are welcome to book these spaces for their groups and are responsible for the AV content they share.

Copyright restrictions apply to public showing of movies and the intellectual property of others. Our community obtains licenses to show such content and pays fees that compensate the copyright owners when we have a movie night in our auditorium. (Netflix and other streaming services do not include a license for showing movies to groups in the basic monthly fee.)
