Accreditation - CCAC 1985 - 2000
Author Last Post

We would not expect a provider to admit that complying with the best practices advocated by a certification organization was the problem, would we? Transparency and accountability are essential good business practices for CCRCs.

Another common reason for dropping the certification process is, "We no longer need it. Our reputation is established and we have a long waiting list." In other words, prospective residents trust us without it. It's important to trust but verify. News of surprise mergers, acquisitions, and bankruptcies that leave residents worse off is a sobering reminder.

About CACC Accreditation.... I had an interesting reaction from CACC some years ago. I was pleased to see the Accreditation plaque posted on the wall outside my mother's CCRC's business office. I knew a bit of what it meant.

A few years later, I noticed that the plaque had been removed. I decided to contact CACC directly to inquire why -- did the community lose accreditation because of something found in an audit or inspection? In essence, "What happened?" I had identified myself as the daughter of a CCRC where I noticed their plaque was gone after being on the wall for a while. Their answer: ask the community. I felt like it was asking someone CACC should serve to be a hen going to the fox... if you get my drift. No matter what the answer, I would have no way of verifying anything. BTW, their answer: it became too expensive to keep renewing -- they had come to the conclusion that the money could be better spent elsewhere in their operations.

In doing some historical research, I came across a booklet celebrating the year 2000 anniversary of the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission. Many of the concerns are familiar a quarter century later.
