CCRC beauty parlor and salon services
Karen Miller

Does your community have a locally owned and operator running your beauty parlor and salon or are you using a national company? What is your experience? For those of us who no longer drive, onsite services are important. Your experience may help all of us.

Our community (Greenspring in Springfield VA), has a salon in each of our 3 clubhouses. The community provides the salon space, however the salon staff is managed by "PS Salon". They specialize in providing salon services at Senior Communities. They also provide services at the AL facility where my moth-in-law lives and at the AL facility where my mother lived before she passed away.

I'm not sure of all the geography that they cover, but they serve about 1,500 locations.

At Covenant Woods (VA), we have a Salon that is vendor managed with multiple services, such as haircuts, massage, pedicures, and finger nail treatments. A separate vendor services Healthcare, and Assisted Living in a different location. I've been here seven years and the service is excellent.

At Wake Robin in Shelburne, VT we have one salon for the whole community of approximately 400 residents. It is located in our Community Center and the one employee is hired by Wake Robin. She provides hair services only. At the present time, there are no manicures or pedicures offered. We also have a no-tipping policy, However, residents contribute to a holiday fund for employees, and each eligible worker gets a check in December, proportional to their hours and position. Presumably and hopefully it is a generous amount as our staff is uniformly wonderful.

Riderwood, run by Erickson Senior Living, uses PS Salon. I believe it's a franchise.

Our community provides the facilities and establishes certain hours and policies. The licensed professionals who work there are independent. I think there is a similar arrangement with certain other professionals such as an audiologist, an opthamolagist, an optometrist, and a podiatrist who see clients using facilities provided by the community.

Our facility has three beauty salons in different buildings managed by a professional company who uses our space. A short time ago we farmed out that service and it seems to be working well.
