Virginia Continuing Care Residents Association

An Education & Advocacy Organization

Feature Community

Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads (GHBC)
Falls Church, Virginia

Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads (GHBC) offers apartment-style living with three levels of care to about 500 residents in an urban setting. Within the building there are the several dining venues, a fitness center, a pool, an art center, a salon, plus free wifi and concierge service. Life at GHBC  is a resident-developed, -managed, and -maintained website for residents, families, staff, and prospects.

Located just 8 miles from the White House, it is not surprising that many of our residents are politically and socially involved. Our many retired foreign service officers and their contacts provide us interesting updates on international affairs. After the Women’s March of 2017, the Silver Panther Huddle formed to actively pursue social justice issues in redistricting, immigration reform, voting rights, health care, and racism. Residents research, write, march, and lobby.

In 2020, Leading Age Virginia awarded the Silver Panthers its Advocacy Award.

Voter Registration

The GHBC VaCCRA chapter has annual voter registration drives to be sure that each resident’s address is current, and it has organized Update Your State-Issued ID days, inviting staff from DMV to come onsite to take photos and issue ID renewals. Before Covid-19, GHBC was a neighborhood polling place, making it easy for residents to vote. Now that is no longer feasible, and many events have been held to assure that residents applied properly for absentee ballots and mailed them to the correct Once ballots were received, tables were set up with knowledgeable residents to help assure that all ballots and their envelopes were completed and signed properly before being  mailed back.

Three-Day Rule Postcard Campaign

Over two-days, postcards were written to urge Congressman Don Beyer and Senator Mark Warner to support the Improving Access to Medicare Coverage Act of 2019 bills in their respective houses. These bills would require so-called Observation Days to count toward the 3-day minimum before Medicare will cover subsequent rehab or nursing care. About 300 postcards were sent.

Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare’s Part D Prescription Drug Plans change every year, so it’s important during Open Enrollment to review and compare various prescription drug plans.
Arrangements were made for two certified Medicare counselors from the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) to come to the GHBC campus and meet with those residents who must find their own prescription coverage every year. During the 45-minute confidential one-on-one sessions, counselors helped each resident review and evaluate all the Medicare approved plans available for the following year. At the end of the day, a total of $20,246 was saved for those residents who participated.

Virginia DMV Real ID

The federal government will require all domestic air travelers to present a REAL ID compliant driver's license or ID card or another federally approved form of identification (like a passport). DMV agreed to provide staff to give a presentation on Real ID here at GHBC. This was followed by a DMV Connect visit (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) during which DMV personnel provided real IDs on site.
